gastronomy1 Tender Greens – Los Angeles (West Hollywood)

If things go according to plan, the entire city of Los Angeles will be amped up on sugar and good spirits this weekend courtesy of the Eat My Blog charity bake sale. This time around, we’ve teamed up with Tender Greens in West Hollywood. It might seem strange to hold a gluttonous event at such a virtuous venue, but I assure you that it all makes perfect sense. After all, what better way to counteract the damage of downing a dozen cupcakes than by consuming a plateful of organic greens afterwards? Guilt assuaged.

While scoping out Tender Greens’ space last week, I went against my carb-loading ways and ordered a salad for lunch. I could’ve eaten local albacore tuna, barbecue chicken, or even flat-iron steak, but decided to step completely out of my comfort zone and went with The Happy Vegan ($10.50). I have never felt more like a stereotypical L.A. gal than I did that afternoon eating a vegan salad in the middle of West Hollywood. At least I didn’t have a small dog with me.

The platter was comprised of four different salads—farro wheat with cranberry and hazelnuts, quinoa with cucumbers and beets, green hummus, and tabouleh. A pile of romaine leaves, along with a large house made crouton, rounded out the plate. Each salad struck a nice balance between healthy and tasty, but my favorite was the the green hummus. I haven’t a clue what’s in there besides lots of chickpeas, herbs, and garlic, but my oh my, was it moreish to the max. I washed it all down with a most refreshing mint-infused lemonade.

Following my fibrous feast, I grabbed a strawberry cupcake ($3) for dessert. It tasted like strawberry shortcake in cupcake form, especially with the biscuit-like cake. I hope that Tender Greens will be donating these for the bake sale.

And I hope to see all of you on Saturday!

Tender Greens: New Location, Same Fresh Fare

New location, same fresh food.

The original Tender Greens location in Culver City became an instant hit with fresh salads, huge sandwiches — and even some fancier entrees like Angus flank steak, and free-range chicken for under $11. Their second Los Angeles location is already as busy as the first, but fear not the wait. One can find a seat at one of the outside tables on Santa Monica Boulevard, or in one of the booths just inside the huge windows of the cavernous new space, which make it a great place to see and be seen.

Like the original, you place your order with the friendly cashier at the counter, pick your table, and wait to chow down. Start with a $5.50 simple salad like the one with red and green butter lettuce in tarragon dressing, or maybe baby spinach with goat cheese, hazelnuts and cabernet vinaigrette. Add a hot entrée for just $5 more, like the herb-brushed albacore tuna.

If you get a hot entrée, you can have it served either on a rustic bread roll with aioli and roasted peppers, or as a plate with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and choice of salad. There are also deliciously fresh soups like the roasted roma tomato bread soup with basil, and the rustic chicken soup with lemon thyme.

Don’t skip desserts like the carrot-top frosted cupcake, the toffee crunch devil’s food cupcake, and the crunchy-but-gooey chocolate chip cookie. It’s amazing that it’s taken this long to get a healthy restaurant in this body-conscious nook of WeHo.

The salad days of summer

Whether or not global warming is to blame, this summer will likely be remembered for its record-breaking heat waves.

And when temperatures soar, taste buds turn to salads.

nrn1 The salad days of summerThis summer’s weather has been a boon to salad-focused restaurants such as Tender Greens in Culver City, Calif., which opened in June. Developed by chef-partners David Dressler, Matt Lyman and Erik Oberholtzer, Tender Greens is a fast-casual concept offering a range of “simple” or “big” salads with sophisticated ingredients that would more typically be found in high-end dining rooms.

The idea, say the partners, is a restaurant offering upscale food in a relaxed setting — the sort of place where chefs might eat on their days off. Sandwiches, soups and a few hot items also are on the menu, but the emphasis is on the salads.

A simple salad at $5, for example, might include baby spinach with goat, hazelnuts and a Cabarnet vinaigrette, to which guests can add various proteins for a few dollars more.

nrn2 The salad days of summerBig salads, designed to serve as entrées at $9, include an ahi tuna nicoise with greens, potato, capers, egg, olives and Dijon vinaigrette, and a grilled flat iron steak salad with red and green butter lettuce, breakfast radishes, red and gold beets and horseradish vinaigrette.

The salads’ combinations are familiar, but the ingredients are top-quality, despite the low prices.

“We just use much better products than others do around town,” Oberholtzer says. “We’re not all things to all people.”

The greens are organic and locally grown, for example, including baby romaine, arugula, måche and spinach as well as various seasonal specials. Tender Greens works in partnership with local growers, which cuts supply costs and allow the daily delivery of freshly picked greens.

Boutique wines are poured by the glass or bottle and microbrew beers are available by the glass or pitcher. And the nearly 100-seat restaurant includes a shaded patio, offering an upscale-dining-in-the-backyard feel.

At Tender Greens, the nicoise is one of the top sellers, as is a chipotle barbecue chicken salad with romaine hearts, avocado, jack, crispy tortilla strips and a creamy lime dressing. Another popular choice is the cobb salad, which includes grilled chicken, romaine, blue, bacon, egg, avocado, tomato and a creamy dressing.

The three partners are planning a second Tender Greens unit in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, which is scheduled to open before the end of the year.
